EMERGENCY WATER SHUT-OFF GUIDE

IMMEDIATE STEPS FOR A WATER EMERGENCY

In the event of a major leak or burst pipe, acting quickly can save you thousands of dollars in water damage. Keep this guide in a visible location.

1. Locate Your Main Shut-Off Valve

Most homes have a main valve that stops all water flow to the house.

  • Basement/Crawlspace: On the wall facing the street.
  • Garage: Near the water heater or utility sink.
  • Outside: In a "meter box" in the ground near the street.

2. How to Close the Valve

  • Ball Valve (Lever): Turn the lever 90 degrees so it is perpendicular to the pipe.
  • Gate Valve (Wheel): Turn clockwise ("Righty-Tighty") until it stops.

3. Open Your Faucets

Once the main valve is closed, open the lowest and highest faucets in your home to drain the remaining water and relieve pressure.

4. Call for Professional Repair

Once the water is off, call for professional assistance to assess the damage and perform the repair.

  • TURN OFF POWER OR GAS TO WATER HEATER
